Malaysian sultan flies into Western Australia in gold jet

Perth residents were left stunned on Thursday by the sight of a gold private jet flying above the city then landing at Perth airport.

The jet, owned by Malaysia's Sultan of Johor, Ibrahim Ismail and his wife Raja Zarith Sofiah, arrived in Western Australian (WA) where they are building a luxury holiday home.

The Sultan, 57, said he and his wife have long enjoyed WA as a holiday destination because they largely go unnoticed.

Ismail's arrival in WA turned heads this time around due to the spectacle of his gold, fully customized Boeing 737.

The plane, believed to have cost more than 100 million U.S. dollars, is equipped with a dining room, bedroom, shower and three kitchens and took two years to be completed to the Sultan's specifications.

Ismail is having a three-story luxury mansion on the Perth waterfront on a plot of land he purchased from the WA government for 6.5 million dollars.

Ismail's net worth is estimated to be upwards of 1 billion dollars, though he has previously said he has to work hard for his money like everyone else.

"I have to earn my living like everyone else. I cannot depend on my allowances of (6700 dollars) a month," Ismail said in March 2015.

"I must earn a living, like ordinary Malaysians do."

Ismail, who has been the Sultan of Johor since January 2010, is a renowned collector of luxury cars, motorcycles and trucks.

A Mack truck built for the Sultan in Brisbane, Australia in 2015 to tow his speedboat is the most expensive vehicle ever made by the company and came fully equipped with a kitchen, big screen television, a double bed and a party deck. Endit
