Tokyo shares open higher on strong U.S. stocks, yen's depreciation

Tokyo shares opened higher Friday on gains in U.S. shares which closed at record highs overnight and the yen's fall against the U.S. dollar.

As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average jumped 134.27 points, or 0.80 percent, from Wednesday to 16,869.39.

Japanese financial markets were closed Thursday due to a national holiday.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange added 7.54 points, or 0.57 percent, to 1,322.37.

Gainers were led by mining, fishery, agriculture and forestry, and real estate issues. Endit
