England hold Germany to goalless draw in international friendly

Xinhua, November 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Silvia Neid's women were held to a goalless draw by England to conclude the last international duty in 2015 on Thursday.

With the result Germany failed to take revenge of a 1-0 loss in the third place play-off at the FIFA World Championship in Canada.

Before the kick-off the DFB (German Football Association) as well as the 6,705 spectators at the Schauinsland-Reisen Arena officially see off veteran goalkeeper Nadine Angerer and striker Celia Sasic, as both players retired following the World Cup.

After the official ceremony, the Germans immediately took over but neither Babett Peter nor Lena Goessling were able to beat England's goalkeeper Karen Bardsley in the opening period.

Bardsley remained in the thick of things as she denied Felicitas Rauch on a one-on-one situation before she tipped a 15-meter hammer by Leonie Maier over the bar.

The Lionesses reaped their first chance five minutes before the break when Demi Stokes tested Germany goalkeeper Laure Benkarth with a shot on target.

The flow of the game got disrupted after the break due to substitutions by both sides. However, German continued their run of England's goal but Bardsley's faultless performance secured her side a goalless draw on the road.

"They have challenged us quite a bit. We weren't able to implement our plan as we wanted," Germany head coach Silvia Neid said. Endit
