EU sets out path for cooperation in defence, security

Xinhua, May 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Commission on Friday proposed a number of ideas to feed into upcoming discussions on Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) in two reports, setting out path for cooperation in defence and security.

The reports which have been sent to the President of the European Council Donald Tusk for the upcoming discussions by Ministers on May 18 and Heads of State and Government on June 25 summarized progress made in key areas related to CSDP, the European Commission said in a press release.

A joint report provided an update on the EU's progress in promoting a European Defence and Technological Industrial Base.

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini made the proposals to increase the effectiveness, impact and visibility of the CSDP in the second report.

Mogherini said: "We are facing serious crises in our neighbourhood. We owe it to our citizens and to our neighbours to tackle them together. This requires a strong political will and I am confident the upcoming meetings of EU Ministers and leaders will clearly indicate it."

The Lisbon Treaty came into force in December 2009 and was a cornerstone in the development of the CSDP, which enables the EU to take a leading role in peace-keeping operations, conflict prevention and in the strengthening of the international security. Endit
