The European Union (EU) will hold many events at the European and national level to celebrate Europe Day on May 9, the European Commission said in a statement Friday.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II as well as the 65th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. Both of these anniversaries will be commemorated across the Europe.
The European Commission will open its doors to the public on the day. There will be several stands representing different Directorates-General, structured around five priority themes, revolving around jobs, growth and investment, among others.
Other events include open door days in EU representations in member states, citizens dialogues and cultural events such as concerts, dance performances, food markets, street art exhibitions and film festivals.
To mark the occasion, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said: "The EU was born in the aftermath of a terrible war and we still live in an unpredictable world. Robert Schuman's words therefore remain as valid today as they were at the time."
The EU marks the anniversary of the day in 1950 when Robert Schuman, one of the founders of the EU, made his Schuman Declaration, outlining a vision to unite separate European states into a single community. Endit
