Valencia renews contract of Spain U-21 Gaya

Xinhua, May 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

Valencia Football Club on Friday announced they had signed an agreement with young left back Jose Luis Gaya.

Gaya, who is a Spain U-21 international, has had an outstanding season at the club and his form had attracted interest from Real Madrid, who were rumored to be interested in paying his buyout clause.

However, Valencia have won the tug of war with Madrid by announcing Gaya has extended his contract until 2020, while increasing his buyout clause to 50 million euros (around 55 million U.S. dollars).

While that clause is still accessible for a club of Real Madrid's economic might, it is a massive amount to play for a defender, no matter how promising they might be, and Gaya's decision is a boost to Valencia as they look to finish fourth in the BBVA Primera Liga and perhaps even above Atletico Madrid in third.

"He is a player who has grown up with us, he is a Valencia fan and he feels the club. This is a success for us and it is very important to have players who want to remain close to our project," said club president Amadeo Salvo. Endi
