Kuznetsova, Kvitkova to play women's singles final in Madird after Friday shocks

Xinhua, May 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

Petra Kvitkova will face Svetlana Kuznetsova in the final of the women's singles in the Mutua Madrid Open after there were surprises in both of Friday morning's semifinals.

First up on court, Kuznetsova defeated her fellow Russian, the reigning Champion and No. 3 seed, Maria Sharapova 6-2, 6-4.

Sharapova never found her rhythm against her powerful rival, her first serve was again disappointing and her game littered with too many unforced errors.

The decisive moment came in the fourth game of the second set when she missed the chance to break her rival's serve.

The following game saw her hit three unforced errors to let Kuznetsova take the decisive break point.

The following match on court saw number 4 seed Kvitkova produce a convincing display to inflict the Serena Williams' first defeat of the year 6-2, 6-3.

Like Sharapova before her, Williams looked to be below her best and appeared to suffering from muscle problems in her legs while Kvitkova, who defeated Williams in Madrid last year, looked hungry for the win.

Williams gritted her teeth to break Kvitkova's serve as the Czech served for the match in the eighth game of the second set, but her lack of form was evident as Kvitkova them broke back directly to take the match and book her place in the final. Endi
