France commemorates victory of May 8 over Nazis

Xinhua, May 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

French President Francois Hollande laid Friday morning a wreath at the statue of General Charles de Gaulle as part of the commemorations of the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory over Nazi Germany.

Accompanied by Prime Minister Manuel Valls, Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Hollande commenced the commemorations with laying a wreath at the statue of General Charles de Gaulle.

Earlier on Friday, Kerry already paid a tribute to the Tomb of Unknown Soldiers under the Arc de Triomphe.

With the presence of several WWII veterans, French president Hollande placed a wreath of blue, white and red flowers to mourn French victims and soldiers dead during the wars.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius will be in Moscow to represent France "at a ministerial level" during the commemorations.

"I will put a wreath and then I will go to the Kremlin," said Wednesday on Europe 1 the head of French diplomacy, stating that he will not attend the parade scheduled on the Red Square. Endit
