UN chief calls for peaceful solution to Ukraine conflict

Xinhua, May 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

Visiting United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon here on Friday called for efforts to find a peaceful solution to the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine, where government troops fight against pro-independence insurgents.

"We stand for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. We support Ukraine's sovereignty and independence," Ban said during his visit to Kiev Museum of the Great Patriotic War.

Ban voiced the UN's solidarity with the Ukrainian people and expressed the organization' s readiness to help the crisis-hit nation.

"Ukraine is one of the founding countries of the UN. Ukraine has sent peacekeepers in many countries around the world. Now, Ukraine is asking for help from the UN and we should support the Ukrainian people," Ban said.

The UN Secretary-General arrived in Kiev earlier in the day for a one-day visit to take part in the commemorative events dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the end of the World War II.

On Saturday, Ban will travel to Moscow to attend the Victory Day celebrations in Russia. Endi
