A country doctor dedicated to the fight against schistosomiasis

One unforgettable night in Chen’s memory happened in July 1991. He was on duty that night at the health center when he suddenly heard shouts of "Help! Help!" from some villagers who carried a dying sufferer of upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage into the hospital. Due to the limited medical conditions there, the patient had to be transferred to another hospital for treatment. But because of the raging waves, sending the patient by boat was very risky. When the patient's family were to give up the transfer, Chen decided to escort the patient to Nanchang, the capital city of the province, for treatment! On the way to the opposite bank, the boat was pitched in the storm. The splashing water and the bloody vomits of the patient dyed Chen’s white uniform. After the boat docked, it took another two hours for them to finally reach the Nanchang City Hospital. The patient was saved because of the timely referral. The next day, when Chen came to visit the patient, the patient said: "You’ve saved my life!"
