Nanjishan Island was isolated and not connected to power supply until 1995. During the period from April to October, the surrounding areas of Poyang Lake became a vast expanse of water. The road was flooded and ferrying became the only way to get out, which made rescuing of critically ill patients very difficult. Exposed to such tough working conditions, the doctors’ health was not guaranteed. Eight of his colleagues left the island one after another because of the unbearable loneliness and vapidity there. Nevertheless, Chen chose to stay in his hometown.
