Slovenian interior minister talks migrations with Danish counterpart

Xinhua, December 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

Slovenian Interior Minister Vesna Gyorkos Znidar has expressed to her Danish counterpart Slovenia's worries and concerns on the issues of migration in the European Union (EU) and the region, local media reported on Wednesday.

Znidar met with visiting Danish minister for immigration, integration and housing Inger Stojberg here on Tuesday to discuss migration, said the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) quoting the ministry's press release.

Gyorkos Znidar told Stojberg that Slovenia had been facing an increase in illegal migrations, which reached 792 in the first nine months of the year, nearly 90 percent up from the same period last year.

Her country also saw an increase in the number of applicants for international protection, which rose by about five times, the interior ministry said in the press release.

The Slovenian minister also briefed her counterpart on the measures Slovenia had taken or is yet to take due to the lack of European solutions, adding that the nation was creating its foreigners' act to tighten asylum procedures.

Though Slovenia is facing an increased number of illegal migrations from Croatia, the Slovenian police is handling the situation well, she said. This is reflected in the fact that there are almost no illegal migrations from other countries.

The interior minister also explained Slovenia's opposition to introducing border controls at the Slovenian-Austrian border, saying the measure would be unjustified and would cause unwanted congestion.

The two ministers deemed the migration situation in the EU and the region to be stable, the press release said, but they shared a view that the coming months were unpredictable.

The two ministers visited the Obrezje border crossing between Slovenia and Croatia, the external Schengen border, where they inspected police officers in the line of duty, according to the press release. Endit
