Ukraine's State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection announced on Wednesday that the case of bird flu had been found in the country for the first time since 2008.
The disease was detected in a private poultry farm in Novoaleksandrivka village in southern Kherson region, the agency said in a statement.
The farmers living in the village keep about 4,500 birds, the agency said, noting that the regional veterinary authorities are taking measures to prevent a spread of the disease.
The bird flu is an infectious disease that spreads among domestic and wild birds and can affect humans. In recent weeks, the virus had been found in several countries across Europe, forcing a ban on poultry exports.
From January through October of 2016, Ukraine's poultry exports rose 46 percent year-on-year to 199,800 tons. Endit
