Austria takes back 3,500 asylum seekers from neighbouring countries

Xinhua, December 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

Austria has taken back 3,520 asylum seekers that passed through its territory into neighbouring countries since July of 2015, it was revealed in cabinet on Wednesday.

The Krone newspaper reported the figures as a Ministry of the Interior response to a parliamentary question from a Team Stronach party representative.

The largest number was sent back by Italy, totalling 1,790 people up to the end of September.

This was followed by the Czech Republic, which had sent back 1,039 persons in the latter half of 2015, and a much lower 47 persons this year. The ministry said these persons had travelled from Austria to the Czech Republic and had from there intended to cross into Germany.

Germany itself sent back 571 asylum seekers.

It was noted that the persons in question had been taken back by Austria as a result of readmission agreements with neighbouring states.

It was further stated by the ministry that its intention is to also send these individuals back to the countries from which they entered Austria. Endit
