Czech Republic toughens punishment for support of terrorism

Xinhua, December 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

Under an amendment to the criminal code passed by Czech Senate on Wednesday, the punishment for terrorism support in the Czech Republic will be tightened and a committed terrorist could face three to 12 years in prison.

The financing of terrorism primarily be punished through the crime of terrorist attack under the current Czech law.

Czech Chamber of Deputies approved on Oct. 19 the amendment under which the financing of terrorism and its promotion will be separate criminal acts.

The amendment includes a separate crime committed by those who "alone or through a different person support a terrorist, a terrorist group or its member or the perpetration of a terrorist criminal act with money or material" or who gather money or other things for this purpose.

The new crimes include the threat with a terrorist act and participation in a terrorist group.

The financing of terrorism can be punished with three to 12 years in prison and the forfeiture of property.

The punishment for robbery, theft, fraud and blackmail committed in order to facilitate or enable a terrorist crime or its financing will also be tightened under the amendment.

The amendment will be submitted to Czech President Milos Zeman to sign into law, and it is likely to take effect on Feb. 1, 2017. Endit
