Eye surgery to increasingly take outpatient form: Austrian experts

Eye surgery in future will increasingly take place on an outpatient basis, Austrian experts said on Wednesday.

Ursula Schmidt-Erfurth, head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Medical University of Vienna, made the remarks together with colleagues at a press conference in Vienna, where international experts in the field are to convene for a congress on Saturday.

It was noted that the trend has already begun, with cataract surgery at the university clinic having been conducted on an outpatient basis for several years, and glaucoma and corneal surgeries also following suit, according to an Austria Press Agency report.

This has been made possible by newer, more efficient methods that forego injections, general anaesthetics, incisions and sutures, in favour of lasers, liquid drops, and minor incisions that close themselves following the surgical procedure.

The more gentle procedures also mean less irritation to the eye. Endit
