As Ivana Zemanova, wife of Czech President Milos Zeman, lit a Christmas tree at Prague Hilton Hotel on Sunday morning, the annual traditional International Christmas Festival of Diplomatic Spouses Association (DSA) was opened.

The one-day event is organized by members of the diplomatic community, and has become one of the most prestigious and sought-after Christmas events in Prague, attracting thousands of visitors every year.

Barbara Blaznik Marc, the DSA president, said different from ambassadors who conduct diplomacy through official channels, their spouses do it differently at the Festival by reaching out to ordinary people and creating opportunity to explore national cultures and customs.

The DSA was founded in 1997 as a nonprofit organization to enable its members to strengthen relations with the cultural heritage of the host country, to share the cultural heritage of their own country and to share information, ideas and interests.

The funds are raised by selling entry tickets, goods at the stalls, internet auctions and from private sponsors or corporate donations.

Diplomatic spouses from the embassies of more than 50 countries attended the Festival. Endit
