Croatia's major opposition party elects new leader

Xinhua, November 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

Croatia's strongest opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP) has elected its new leader, local media reported on Sunday.

Davor Bernardic was elected the new party president in Saturday's runoff election in the SDP, and he will helm the party for next four years, succeeding the nine-year long leader Zoran Milanovic.

Bernardic, 36, won 64.54 percent of the vote, according to the results from 91 percent polling stations.

He started his political career in 2008 as president of SDP's Youth Forum and at the same year he was elected a member of parliament. In 2012, he became a member of SDP Presidency.

After SDP lost in an early parliamentary election in September 2016, Milanovic announced he would not run for party chief again. Bernadic beat all the other candidates, becoming the new leader of the party. Endit
