Spanish police detain man attempting to join IS

Xinhua, November 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

Spanish Civil Guards on Sunday detained a man at Madrid's Barajas-Adolfo Suarez airport who allegedly attempted to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State (IS), the Spanish Interior Ministry said.

The man, who is reported to be a Palestinian with Spanish nationality, was living in the town of Vencidario on the island of Gran Canaria in the Spain's Canary Islands off the west coast of Africa and after his arrest in Madrid agents also searched his house.

The Interior Ministry said they had opened an investigation into the detainee in 2104 and discovered his intention to travel to Syria.

This was his second attempt to join the IS and he had previously been in Turkey, where he was arrested and returned to Spain in July of this year. He was placed under police observation and on this occasion he was stopped in Jordan and returned to Madrid, where he was placed in custody.

This is the 163rd arrest of a suspected extremist since Spain moved onto a level four terror alert in June 2015. Endit
