Fictional Dreams May Come True

"Since Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 mysteriously vanished in March 2014, we have often heard about the world’s oceans remaining "95 percent unexplored" and the surface of the Moon or Mars being more understood to us than our own ocean floor," said Zheng at the beginning of his lecture.

However, according to Zheng, the current shortcomings of satellite radar and deep-sea submersible in measuring and exploring the landscape of our ocean floor, leave an opportune gap for the human imagination. While we may not yet have a clear picture of our ocean floor, we can look to our favorite science fiction books and movies, and perhaps turn these fantasies into reality. In fact, some of the technologies for ocean floor exploration from our wildest fantasies are already being developed.
