China: Supersizing Maritime Science

In June 2012, Jiaolong, a Chinese manned deep-sea submersible, reached a depth of 7,062 meters below the sea at the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean, the deepest of China's manned submersible. "It is a milestone in our maritime science journey," said Zhu Min.

"Just a few decades ago, China barely featured in the world science rankings. Now, it ranks among the world’s top 6 in maritime research," continued Zhu, explaining that China has been striving to master deep sea diving technology to explore the ocean beds for minerals and precious metals.

"Despite this rapid progress, China still faces a number of challenges that will require ongoing efforts from our young generations," Zhu appealed.
