Editor's notes: From deep sea submersibles to space mutation breeding, from geothermal energy to high-performance computing for genomic analysis—how much do you really know about the current undertakings of scientific and technological exploration?

What if computing in genomic analysis could enable us to forego cancer altogether by targeting certain specific characteristics of potential cancer cells? What if produce grown in outer space were capable of solving world hunger? What if we could harness our imagination to conquer technological shortcomings and trace Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 to its specific resting place on the ocean floor?

Six Chinese scientific experts and scholars gathered at the SELF (Science, Education, Life and Future) forum in Beijing on October 30 to discuss these topics and share their ideas on exploring the natural world.

The Chinese TED-style forum had hundreds of visitors and attracted much media attention.

Dr. Niu Beifang from the Computer Network Information Center (CNIC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) said that it was very much possible to uncover the genomic architecture of gene fusions.

"With the advent of new high-performance computing (HPC) technologies and genomic tools, we are entering an era where healthcare professionals can make more informed decisions on clinical care."

"HPC could accelerate genetic analysis and identification of targeted treatments for patients," he said.
