China's Zhou Cong set a new world record to win gold in the men's 100m backstroke S8 at the Rio Paralympics on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old finished in one minute 2.90 seconds to beat the previous record held by Russia's Konstantin Lisenkov by 0.42sec.

Britain's Oliver Hynd took silver in 1:04.46 and Robert Griswold claimed bronze in 1:04.68.

Zhou was left with spinal cord injuries after a car accident when he was 16.

He was previously a promising able-bodied swimmer, winning several national championship titles. Endit
