Leaders from the East African region kicked off a day-long summit in Somali capital Mogadishu on Tuesday, vowing to hasten stabilization efforts in Somalia.

GENEVA -- The UN Special Envoy for Syria said Tuesday that a ceasefire brokered by the United States and Russia was largely holding, adding that more time was needed to assess the situation on the ground.
"Compared to previous days, there is no doubt a significant drop in violence," Staffan de Mistura told reporters during a press conference held here just 24 hours after the ceasefire taking into effect. (UN-Syria-Truce)

JERUSALEM -- Israel's defense ministry announced Tuesday that Israel successfully launched a military surveillance satellite.
The satellite Ofeq-11, lifted off in the afternoon from the Palmachim airbase south of Tel Aviv, was launched by the defense ministry and Military Industry, Israel's state-owned weapons company. (Israel-Satellite)

MEXICO CITY -- Mexican authorities have arrested Clara Elena Laborin, also known as "La Senora" (The Mrs.), wife of jailed drug lord Hector Beltran Leyva, the Federal Police said on Tuesday.
Laborin, who allegedly runs organized crime rings in Mexico's once-famed Pacific coast resort of Acapulco, was captured on Monday in Hermosillo, capital of the northern state of Sonora, from where she managed the operation, said Omar Garcia, chief of the Federal Police investigative unit.
