Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi to Jakarta on Wednesday encountered severe turbulence about 45 minutes prior to landing in the Soekarno Hatta international airport, leaving 31 people wounded with nine of them taken to hospital, an Indonesian official said.

The incident took place when the plane was flying above Sumatra Island of western Indonesia, said Herni Pramuharjo, spokesman of transport ministry.

"The plane was hit by turbulence when it was in the air between Medan (capital of North Sumatra) and Palembang (capital of South Sumatra). Eight passengers and one stewardess are seriously injured. All of them have been rushed into a nearby hospital,"he told Xinhua by phone.

The plane landed safely at Soekarno Hatta airport, said Pramuharjo.
