Detained Bangladeshis belong to all-foreigner terror group in Singapore

Xinhua, May 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

Eight Bangladeshi nationals detained for terrorism-related activities is the first terror group of all foreigners busted in Singapore, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Wednesday.

The MHA said on Tuesday that the Bangladeshi nationals were detained as part of a secret group - the Islamic State in Bangladesh (ISB) - for planning attacks in their home country.

The eight men had each worked in Singapore for cumulative periods of between three and ten years, and they generally lived in different accommodation in the country.

While the Bengladeshis were all employed in the local construction and marine industries, they were not known to be radicalized or involved in terrorism-related activities at the time when they first came to work in Singapore.

The MHA also indicated that there was no indication that this group of Bangladeshi nationals were also members of the Bangladeshi radical religious group who were arrested last year.

"Some of them are, however, personally acquainted with a few members of the radical religious group because they chanced upon one another in Singapore," the ministry added.

The Bangladeshi nationals in both incidents were not known to have targeted Singapore at the time of their arrests. Endit
