Police officers among 15 detained for corruption in Portugal

Xinhua, April 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Portugal's criminal police detained 15 men, including two police offers, on Tuesday for alleged corruption, including drug trafficking and money laundering, according to local media reports.

The office of the Attorney General said searches are still taking place in several areas in Lisbon and in the country's second biggest city Porto in the north.

Around 120 searches have already been carried out by over 200 police offers.

The 15 people detained were aged between 39 and 60 and include a retired coordinator of the criminal police and an inspector of the national unity to combat drug trafficking (UNCTE), according to reports.

The retired coordinator and the police inspector received thousands of euros from traffickers in the past two years. They allegedly hampered investigations, ignored cases of suspects of drug trafficking and accepted bribery in exchange for information. Enditem
