Uganda names boxing team for Olympic qualifiers

The Uganda Boxing Federation has named a 8-member team for the Rio Olympic Games qualifiers in Yaounde, Cameroon on March 9-13.

Kenneth Gimugu, President of the Federation said on Wednesday that they held national championships which ended on Monday for the selections.

"This is a chance for our boxers to try their luck and qualify for the Olympic Games to take place in Brazil," said Gimugu.

Uganda is yet to have a boxer qualify for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

The last time Uganda had a boxer at the Olympics was in 2008 when Ronald Serugo played at the Beijing Games.

The squad includes Mutebi Umar (Light fly weight 49Kg), Marvin Omomdi (Flyweight 52Kg), Antnus Mugerwa (Bantamweight 56Kg), Sula Segawa (Lightweight 60Kg), Tony Mukiibi (Light Welterweight 64Kg), Muzamir Kakande (Welterweight 69Kg), Reagan Segawa (Middleweight 75Kg) and Willy Kyakonye (Heavyweight 91Kg).
