Santos give up on Van der Vaart

Xinhua, March 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

Santos have given up in their attempts to sign former Holland international Rafael Van der Vaart.

The 33-year-old was offered to the Brazilian club by current employers Real Betis of Spain last week.

The midfielder, who played at two World Cups and also represented Spanish giants Real Madrid, has a contract until 2018 with the La Liga outfit.

However, after considering offering a contract based heavily on productivity, Santos have decided to pull out of negotiations, according to Globo Esporte.

The decision follows an assessment of the player's current physical and technical condition.

Due to the number of injuries the player has suffered throughout his career and his lack of ability to play a sustained sequence of matches, a deal has fallen through.

Santos could now well turn their attention to Sao Paulo midfielder Michel Bastos, following the exits of Geuvanio and Marquinhos Gabriel, as well as the failed attempt to sign former favourite Robinho. Endit
