UN human rights body should not be undermined by politicization, double standards: Chinese diplomat

A senior Chinese diplomat said here on Wednesday that the UN Human Rights Council should not be undermined by politicization and double standards, or to use human rights to interfere in the sovereignty of other countries.

Liu Hua, special representative of the human rights affairs from China's Foreign Ministry, said during the General Segment of the 31 session of the UN Human Rights Council that the world was still plagued by conflict and poverty, and all human rights were intrinsically rooted in the values and principles of all countries.

"All States, big or small, rich or poor, were equal members of the international community," Liu stressed, adding that there was more than one way to govern a state, and the wishes of the people on the ground were essential.

According to him, the balance between the two types of human rights, economic, social and cultural rights and the civil and political rights, should be attached the same importance.

The Council will next meet on Thursday to hold a panel discussion on climate change and the right to health, followed by an interactive clustered dialogue with the UN Special Rapporteurs for the environment and adequate housing.

Created in 2006, the UN Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body within the UN system made up of 47 states responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe. Enditem
