Former Israeli President Peres back in hospital due to chest pains

Xinhua, January 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

Former Israeli President Shimon Peres was rushed to hospital on Sunday evening due to an irregular heart rate, the second time in 10 days, his assistant said.

The 92-year-old complained of chest pains, and an irregular heart rate was detected, the assistant said in a statement on Sunday evening.

The paramedics decided to send him to hospital for overnight observation and a series of tests. He was in a stable condition.

Peres was evacuated to hospital ten days ago after experiencing chest pains and a cardiac catheterization following what doctors dubbed as a "mild heart attack." He returned home on Tuesday.

The former president, who ended his tenure in 2014, remains active in public via the Peres Center for Peace, advocating for coexistence and peace between Jews and Arabs in the Middle East. He is also promoting high-tech ingenuity worldwide.

In a nearly seven-decade political career, Peres served as the prime minister and won the Noble Peace Prize in 1994 for signing the Oslo peace accords with the Palestinians. Endit
