Int'l aid agencies suspend in Sudan's West Darfur for lack of fund: report

Xinhua, January 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

Two international aid organizations operating in Sudan's war-torn West Darfur State have announced to suspend their activities due to lack of funding, Sudan Tribune reported Sunday.

"As of January 2016, the INGOs Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) and INTERSOS closed their offices in West Darfur due to funding constraints," Sudan Tribune quoted the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Sudan as saying.

The two INGOs have handed over their activities to the respective state government line ministries, the report said.

The IRW was providing food, health, water and sanitation, education, emergency shelter and household supplies, and livelihood assistance in West Darfur, while INTERSOS was implementing water sanitation and hygiene as well as peace-building activities.

It brings the number of INGOs that have phased out of West Darfur due to funding constraints to three in the last seven months alone, after the INGO Fellowship for African Relief (FAR) that phased out of West Darfur in May 2015.

The Darfur region has been suffering from a civil war since 2003 which led to the killing of thousands of civilians and displacement of millions from their villages. Endit
