New biomedicine center set up in Bratislava

Xinhua, January 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

A new Biomedicine Center has been set up under the auspices of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) in Bratislava.

"There are teams of top scientists, and the center will achieve significant results in the European scientific arena," announced SAV chairman Pavol Sajgalik on Tuesday.

Research into oncological, infectious, endocrinological, metabolic and cardiovascular diseases will be made even more effective and of greater quality, he said. The unification of these institutes into one will reduce operating expenditures.

"By being in one place, the time taken for research will be cut and treatments might get to patients more quickly," explained Sajgalik.

The Biomedicine Centre employs almost 400 workers and students (PhD). The construction work on the University Science Park began two years ago and it cost 39.5 million euros (42.9 million U.S. dollars). The center is made up of the Experimental Endocrinology Institute, the Experimental Oncology Institute, the Clinical and Translation Research Institute and the Virology Institute. Endit
