Zambia defeat Zimbabwe 1-0 in 2016 CHAN tie

Xinhua, January 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Chipolopolo of Zambia on Tuesday kick off their 2016 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) with a 1-0 win over Zimbabwe in a Group D match played at the Umuganda Stadium in Rubavu, Rwanda.

Veteran Isaac Chansa, who was part of Zambia's 2012 Africa Cup of Nations Championship (Afcon), netted the lone goal in the 57th minute after a good cross by Clatous Chota Chama.

Zimbabwe tried to create scoring chances but found the Zambian defense tight. Zimbabwe had injured Elisha Muroiwa replaced as he was rushed to hospital with a bad injury.

"We know each other well enough. We are happy to pick the three points in the opening game," said Zambia's skipper Christopher Katongo after the game.

The Zimbabwe's coach George Lwandamina said he was disappointed that his players did not take the scoring chances that came their way.

"We created many chances but failed to score. We now need to go back to the drawing board ahead of our next game against Mali," he added. Endit
