High Bulgarian officials met here on Tuesday with visiting U.S. Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland to discuss bilateral and regional issues such as defense and energy.

Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev told Nuland that the strategic partnership between Bulgaria and the United States "is of great importance not only for our country but also for the region," Plevneliev's press office said in a statement.

Bulgaria and the United States will deepen their cooperation in the field of cyber security, the statement said.

Plevneliev and Nuland also discussed bilateral cooperation in the field of energy security, as well as the attraction of more U.S. investment into Bulgaria.

Earlier on Tuesday, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov met with Nuland. They reviewed bilateral defense cooperation and praised the interaction between law enforcement authorities in combating terrorism, the Bulgarian Government Information Service said.

Meanwhile, Nuland held a meeting with the country's Defense Minister Nikolay Nenchev focusing on the possibility of modernization of Bulgarian Air Force, and on the trends in the defense spending, the Defense Ministry said in a statement. Endit
