Sweden, Morrocco enter repatriation deal for street children

Xinhua, January 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

Sweden and Morrocco on Tuesday entered an agreement to facilitate the return of homeless children roaming the Nordic country's streets.

The two nations will set up a committee tasked with identifying and repatriating Morroccan street children, the Swedish government said in a statement.

"We had a good discussion and are now in agreement to work together for a better return of Morroccan citizens," Interior Minister Anders Ygeman said.

In September, public broadcaster Swedish Television reported that around 200 children, some as young as nine years old, were spending their nights in central Stockholm, many without seeking help from authorities.

The Swedish government said it was prepared to assist Morroccan officials with training and technical support and support civil society organizations aiming to help the children resettle. Endit
