Uganda to start kidney transplants by end of year

Uganda will start kidney transplants and complicated operations once the completion of the ongoing rehabilitation and upgrading of Mulago National Referral is done in November.
Asuman Lukwago, the permanent secretary of the ministry of health told reporters that the move is aimed at reducing the high costs of treatment abroad.
"With the new upgrade, the hospital will be able to carry out its mandate of attending to specialized cases which cannot be easily handled by other doctors. This is expected to reduce the number of referrals abroad," said Lukwago.
After completion, Lukwago said the hospital will have a 1,000 bed capacity and state of the art medical equipment.
"The hospital will have specialized doctors to attend to complicated cases and will be able to carry out complicated surgeries such as kidney transplants," he said.
Lukwago said that some 30 medical officers are undergoing special kidney transplant training and operations at Yashoda hospital, India.
Ugandans spend millions of U.S. dollars to fly abroad for kidney transplant, operations and treatment. Endite
