Austria only able to implement makeshift measures in tackling refugee crisis: chancellor

Xinhua, January 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

Austrian chancellor Werner Faymann Tuesday acknowledged his government only had temporary and emergency solutions to offer in tackling the ongoing refugee crisis.

Speaking to the media following a cabinet meeting, Faymann said it was vital hotspots be established on the outer borders of the European Union along with implementation of a uniform European right of asylum.

He added that as long as this does not happen, "everything else is a makeshift measure."

The chancellor said Wednesday's national summit on the asylum issue, involving leaders from federal and state levels, will aim to reach a joint solution to the crisis to show the populace "we are acting together as a government."

Faymann said one of the goals will be to set measures that will reduce the number of asylum seekers, acknowledging this will have to include upper limits to their numbers entering Austria. Endit
