Russia consults with Iran before air raids on terrorists in Syria: official

Xinhua, October 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Russia made consultations with Iran before launching air strikes on terrorists' positions in Syria, Iran's Majlis (parliament) Speaker Ali Larijani was quoted as saying by Press TV on Saturday.

"Consultations were already made (by Russia) with Iran about a coalition to fight terrorists" in Syria, Larijani said in a joint press conference with the visiting Marshal of Poland's Senate Bogdan Borusewicz.

Although the air raids have been carried out with precision so far, "it is early to judge (the results) of Russia's attacks on terrorists' positions in Syria," he said.

As for the death of Iran's prominent commander recently killed in Syria, Iran's Defense Minister Hossein Dehqan said Saturday that the Islamic State (IS) militants will be revenged for this act.

"With no doubt, the co-fighters of Hossein Hamadani will continue his path and will take revenge by uprooting the terrorist group of the IS," Dehqan said.

Iran has confirmed that the commander of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, Gen. Hossein Hamadani, was killed by IS in Syria on Thursday.

He was recently serving in Syria as both an adviser to the Syrian government and as an overseer for operations of the pro-Syrian army forces.

Iran, the staunchest regional ally of the Syrian government, was said to have been sending military advisers and training Shiite militants to fight alongside the Syrian forces in the face of Jihadi groups in the war-torn country. Endit
