Burkina Faso gov't blames coup plotters for attack on gendarmerie brigade

Xinhua, October 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

The government of Burkina Faso said Friday the leaders of a failed coup last month were behind the unidentified gunmen attack on a gendarmerie brigade near the country's western border with Mali.

Three gendarmes and one assailant were killed during the attack, and the brigade was burnt down, according to an official statement.

On Friday evening, the transition government said in a statement that the "jihadist" act was sponsored by coup plotters.

Transition authorities condemned the attack as "barbarous" and "filthy" act.

They went on saying that investigations lead to the conclusion that it is the "continuity" of coup supporters' plan to destabilize the West African county.

Eleven charges have been held on Tuesday against the main leaders of the failed coup attempt, including former army chief Gilbert Diendere and Djibril Bassole, ministry of Foreign Affairs under the regime of Blaise Compaore driven from power by insurrection in October 2014.

Most of the 1300 members of the presidential security regiment (RSP), who tried to seized power last September, surrendered and have been disarmed.

But about 30 soldiers of this elite army unit are still on the run. The RSP is a well equipped and trained unit of Burkina Faso army under the 27 years regime of Blaise Compaore. Endit
