1st LD: Six dead in Azerbaijan-Armenia border clashes

Xinhua, October 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Azerbaijani troops on Friday killed six Armenian soldiers in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry said Saturday.

One Azerbaijani soldier was also wounded as a result of heavy clashes starting late Friday in the enclave claimed by both Azerbaijan and Armenia, the ministry said in a statement.

The Azerbaijani army has controlled the combat situation, it added.

The two ex-Soviet nations regularly exchanged fire along their shared border and across Karabakh's volatile frontline, and clashes intensified last month.

Clashes along the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan and around Nagorno-Karabakh have stoked fears of a wider conflict breaking out in the South Caucasus, which is crossed by oil and gas pipelines.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been locked in a bitter dispute over the mountainous region of Nagorno-Karabakh seized by Armenia-backed forces from Azerbaijan in 1991. Peace talks have been held since 1994 when a ceasefire was reached. Endi
