Burkina Faso's transition gov't restored after coup: president

Xinhua, September 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Burkina Faso's Transition President Michel Kafando said on Wednesday in a message broadcast on radio and television that the "transition was back."

"Starting Thursday, the transition government will meet to continue with the normal programs," he said.

Kafando who was arrested by the putschists before being released, thanked the Burkinabe people who ensured the failure of last week's coup by Presidential Security Regiment (RSP).

On Tuesday night, the putschists and loyalist forces who had threatened to confront each other, signed a five-point agreement ending hostilities between them.

According to the agreement, RSP agreed to return to their barracks at Naaba Koom II camp and to leave the checkpoints they had set up in Ouagadougou.

The loyalist forces promised to protect RSP security personnel and their families.

On Sept. 16, 2015, RSP soldiers led by Gen. Gilbert Diendere arrested the transition president, his prime minister, members of the cabinet and dissolved the government, before setting up the National Council for Democracy.

Anti-coup protests have left ten people dead and 100 others injured.

"I urge you to remain mobilized around the transition government so that together we can return the electoral process back on track after having honoured our fellow citizens who unfairly died while defending their homeland," Kafando concluded. Endit
