Thousands of displaced people in Chad left without humanitarian aid

Xinhua, September 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Out of over 40,000 displaced people in Chad's Lake Region, only 16,169 have obtained humanitarian assistance, a report from the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) revealed Tuesday.

"Emergency aid in terms of bedding, food, water, health and sanitation is still needed," the document seen by Xinhua indicated.

Capacity for humanitarian response in the Lake region remains worrying, especially due to shortage of funds, the humanitarian agency said.

A response plan adopted by the national humanitarian team on Sept. 16 required 11.5 million U.S. dollars, but only 1.2 million has been mobilized so far.

Some localities in the Lake region where the Chadian army has been carrying out operations against Boko Haram for several months remain inaccessible due to security reasons.

"The humanitarian community has not yet had access to some 11,000 people who were displaced and fled to inaccessible zones," the OCHA report concluded. Endit
