Spain in 2015 experiences one of hottest summers

Xinhua, September 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

2015 saw Spain experience one of the hottest summers since records began, the Spanish Meteorological Office (AEMET) said Wednesday.

AEMET said July had been the hottest on record with average temperatures 2.5 degrees Celsius above the norm, while June had seen temperatures which were 1.4 degrees higher than average.

Although August was the "coolest" of the summer months in Spain, that too was relative with temperatures hotter than average by 0.5 degrees Celsius.

Overall, the summer was 1.5 degrees Celsius hotter than the average recorded over the 30-year period between 1980 and 2010.

The agency expects that the autumn will see higher rainfall than average, especially in the northeast of the country.

AEMET predicts temperatures will be between 1 and 1.5 degrees Celsius above the average of 15-16 degrees centigrade.

There is a 60-70 percent chance of higher than average rainfall in the northeast of the country and a 50-55 percent probability of more rain in the rest of Spain as a result of the effects of the "El Nino" weather phenomenon, which sees raised sea-surface temperatures lead to higher rainfall. Endit
