Mexican club Tigres will face Argentine team River Plate on Wednesday night in Buenos Aires seeking to win Copa Bridgestone Libertadores and to fulfill Mexico's dream, local media reported.
Tigres might be the first Mexican club to win the regional tournament, which would be a feat in the history of Mexico's football, according to local daily sports Record.
Tigres are visiting River Plate and have considerable possibilities to give Mexico its first Copa Libertadores. The first game of the final was played in Mexico's northern city of Monterrey and the result was a 0-0 tie.
Fifteen years after a Mexican club was invited for the first time in CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation) tournament, only two teams, Cruz Azul and Chivas, have been close to win the championship. That is why Copa Libertadores has become an obsession for Mexican teams.
In 2010, Chivas played the final of Copa Libertadores against Brazil's Porto Alegre. Marco Fabian, player of Chivas, spoke to Record about the dream about a Mexican team to win the competition.
"A final of Copa Libertadores is very different to other finals. We play to win because it is one of the most important tournaments in the world. What I experienced then (in 2010) is unforgettable, passion is something beautiful," he said.
"We have been close, competing with important South American teams and it is complicated because there are difficult fields in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay. But Mexican teams have been up to the task," he added.
Tigres is confident and are totally supported by its fans, who dream about the championship, as well as all the Mexican football fans who have wished them luck in the regional tournament. Even Boca Juniors, historical rival of River Plate, has discretely supported the Mexican club. Endi
