U.S. can resume sanctions against Iran: official

Xinhua, August 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

A high U.S. federal government official told lawmakers on Wednesday that the United States can "reimpose sanctions unilaterally" if Iran violates the newly-reached Iran nuclear deal.

"Of course, we must guard against the possibility that Iran does not uphold its side of the bargain," said Adam Szubin, the Treasury Department's acting under secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence in a Senate hearing.

"We will be able to promptly snap back both U.S. and UN sanctions, and our EU colleagues have reserved the ability to do so with respect to their sanctions as well," said Szubin.

"The United States has the ability to reimpose those sanctions unilaterally, even over the objections of other P5 members," said Szubin.

At present, the Obama administration has been busy with lobbying Congress to support the nuclear deal reached between Iran and the United States and five other world powers on July 14.

Lawmakers will not decide whether to approve the deal until September. Endi
