Malaysian caught with drugs at Singapore

Xinhua, July 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

A 20-year-old Malaysian was caught with 900 grams of cannabis at the Woodlands Checkpoint here on Wednesday, according to a press release from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) of Singapore.

The man was stopped for routine checks upon his arrival when ICA officers detected a bulge around his waist, ICA said, adding that the seized package was found to contain about 900 grams of cannabis, worth an estimated street value of about 29,000 Singapore dollars.

Under the Misuse of Drugs Act, those convicted of importing more than 500 grams of cannabis may face the death penalty. 900 grams of cannabis is sufficient to feed the addiction of about 128 cannabis abusers for a week.

"Our borders are our first line of defence in safeguarding Singapore's security, and security checks are critical to our nation's security," ICA said, adding that the Home Team agencies will continue to conduct checks on passengers and vehicles at the checkpoints to prevent attempts to smuggle in undesirable persons, drugs, weapons, explosives and other contrabands.
