An Egyptian criminal court on Wednesday sentenced former prime minister Ahmed Nazif, who served under ousted President Hosni Mubarak, for five years in prison over corruption and using his post for illicit gains, official MENA news agency reported.
Cairo Criminal Court also ordered Nazif to pay a fine of 53.3 million Egyptian pounds (about 6.8 million U.S. dollars) and to return illicit gains of 48.6 million Egyptian pounds (about 6.2 million dollars) disguised under the names of his wife and two sons.
The Illicit Gains Authority referred Nazif to criminal court after investigations showed that his wealth is extremely contradictory with his income and that he illegally used his post to make big money that exceeded 100 million Egyptian pounds (about 13 million dollars).
Most of Mubarak's officials were eventually acquitted of corruption, profiteering and illicit gains charges after they had been detained following January 2011 uprising that led to the ouster of the long-time president.
In late November 2014, the court acquitted Mubarak himself, his two sons Gamal and Alaa and six of his top security aides, including his interior minister Habib al-Adli, of financial corruption. Endit
