Zambia's anti-drug agency on Wednesday said it arrested 2,470 people countrywide in the first half of 2015 for various drug and money laundering activities.

Theresa Katongo, public relations officer of the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) , said a total of 2,470 people were arrested by the end of June for drug-related offenses while 949 were convicted.

Katongo said 40 people were arrested for money laundering activities during the period.

Lusaka, the country's capital, recorded the highest number of people arrested at 496 followed by the Copperbelt Province with 430 while Luapula Province had 306 arrests with the rest coming from the other seven provinces, she added.

The agency, she said, seized nearly 100 tons of cannabis seeds and plants during the same period and added that the agency was committed to fight drug abuse, trafficking and money laundering in the country. Endit
