Slovakia to aid Austria in tackling migration crisis

Some refugees requesting asylum in neighbouring Austria will be able to find temporary shelter in Slovakia, confirmed Slovak interior ministry spokesperson Andrea Dobiasova on Friday.
"It'll be a short-term aid in the form of provision of accommodation premises for the duration of the humanitarian crisis. Each individual will stay in Slovakia only for the duration of the asylum process and return to Austria following its termination," stressed Dobiasova, adding that the entire process usually takes a couple of months.
The number of foreigners that Slovakia will temporarily take in could gradually swell to up to 500 refugees. During their stay in Slovakia, migrants will be registered under the Austrian asylum process and supervised by Austrian officials.
"These individuals not only don't want to stay here but they can't because, seeing as this is an Austrian asylum process, they're under Austrian jurisdiction," added Dobiasova.
Aside from cooperation with Austria, Bratislava stands ready to increase its quotas in humanitarian transfers that have been carried out since 2008. This could mean that the total number of refugees transferred to their target country could be bolstered from the originally planned 600 to up to 1,000. Endit
